Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin is a renowned Indian physician specializing in hepatology and gastroenterology. He is the Chancellor, Director, and Senior Professor of Hepatology at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi. Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin completed his MBBS in 1974 from Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur, and secured first place across five medical colleges in the university.
After that, he did his MD in General Medicine and Therapeutics in 1978 from Rajasthan University, Jaipur.
During his postgraduate studies, he received the University of Rajasthan Outstanding Merit Scholarship for three years.
In 1981, he earned a Doctor of Medicine in Gastroenterology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, thereby specializing in gastroenterology.
In 2003, Dr Shiv Kumar was appointed as Adjunct Professor at the Special Centre for Molecular Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
He has mentored nearly 90 post-doctoral students in gastroenterology and guided over two dozen Ph.D. candidates in basic sciences, contributing significantly to medical education reforms in India.

Dr. Sarin has developed innovative treatment protocols for conditions like variceal bleeding, liver regeneration, hepatitis B, and acute-on-chronic liver failure.
He was the first to model portal hemodynamics in mice and study schistosomiasis-related portal hypertension.
His work includes over 890 publications, cited more than 80,000 times on Google Scholar, and he has contributed to 21 major guidelines, including six guidelines from the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL).
